My Top 50 Greatest Songs of All time
50
British Weather- Decade
For me when listening to a song one of the first things I look for are meaningful lyrics, and this song typifies that. The song relates the emotions of the person in question to British weather which we often describe as being dull and negative and back in 2015 when I first found this song that's where i was at. Although the song is not what many would class as main stream for me its a hidden gem as are many of the songs in this countdown. My personal opinion is you only ever discover the most meaningful music if you are prepared to do a bit of digging.
49
Like A Stone- Audioslave
Chris Cornell for me is one of the best vocalists of all time and his death in 2017 was a terrible thing to happen to the industry. The reason why i love this song so much is it really plays to the strengths of the vocalist, if you listen carefully his tone is constantly changing and adapting to suit the instrumentals and the song itself is just a masterpiece. In terms of the meaning of the song Cornell is quoted as saying 'Its a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: you work hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway.
48
Trials and Tribulations- We are the Ocean
Taken from the 2011 album 'Go now and live', this song incorporates the voices of the band's two main vocalists at the time Dan Brown and Jack Spence. For me the two voices compliment each other extraordinarily well, you have the deeper more gruff sounding voice of Brown and then the soothing more down to earth voice of Spence. The song itself relates to depression and the constant thinking pattern related to negativity in life and the use of alcohol to soothe those problems. Although the lyrics don't relate to me directly the song allows you to explore the issues of the character personified.
47
Booooom Blast & Ruin- Biffy Clyro
Another great song from another one of my favourite vocalists of all time Simon Neil. This song is taken from the 2010 album 'Only Revolutions' and in my opinion is the band's best song due to the variation in tone and constant flowing instrumentals. I would also go as far to say this is their best album. As with many bands like this Biffy have now been moulded into a modern rock money making machine, but their older stuff is gold. Lyrically, the song is about the battles of a modern relationship and the constant power struggle.
Melbourne- DMA'S
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0LuwAMS3Xk
Taken from the 2016 album 'Hills End', for me DMA'S are a better version of Oasis, less boring and without the drama that comes with the Gallagher Brothers. Tommy O'dell on vocals is another one of the very best and this particular song is a perfect expression of his abilities when it comes to range and expression. Bands like this are underrated in a sense as they play second fiddle to what already exists that is similar (IE Stone Roses, Oasis etc).
45
Old Romantics- Max Raptor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c7RzzKUbFA
Since the 80's and 90's Punk Rock has very much gone off the grid in my opinion, there will never again be any bands quite like The Clash, The Jam and The Ramones etc, but Max Raptor are a modern day version of all of these bands in one and their unique sound is what makes them so good. They may not be well known, but their sound optimises everything you want from a punk rock band, the raucous and unpredictable nature of a front-man and the powerful instrumentals to go with it. The song itself is about stepping out of your comfort zone and being willing to escape from the idea that some of us are 'wrapped up in cotton wool', I would definitely recommend anyone who is a fan of punk rock to give it a try.
44
W.O.E- Little Comets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMqAwa9D6bw
One of the bands I have had the pleasure of seeing live and one of the better Indie bands out there. This song is taken from the 2012 album 'Life is Elsewhere' and seems to relate politically to the downfall of the labour party and the introduction of a conservative government,. The band themselves hail from Jarrow in the North East, one of the most hard hit areas in recent times, so the name of the song 'W.O.E' to me symbolises the woe of the North East in a way. Aside from the meaning of the song it is very well put together, with some unique sounding instrumentals.
43
Die in This Town- The Seige
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Oy5faeeS0U
I recently discovered this duo on a YouTube video I was watching. The blend of rap and hip hop within this particular song is brilliant and for me rap as a genre is sometimes overly boring and generic but this really breaks the mould as far as that opinion is concerned. All I hear in this piece is pure vocals, no auto tune and that is what ruins some modern day rap and hip hop; overuse of auto tune, clearly these vocalists trust their own voices which is refreshing to see.
42
Situations- New Found Glory
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y3ydttFrpM
Taken from the 2008 album 'Hits', this song was originally meant to be used as an MTV promotion but was eventually scrapped. Regardless, its still the best song on this album and relates to a man who is constantly battling for his wife/girlfriend's attention and her apparent manipulation of everyday situations. Again, its a left field choice as well and I was only 12 when this album came out, but you only develop your own music taste if you are prepared to look around and breakaway from the standard chart music mentality.
41
Invisible Touch- Genesis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epOBenUjIHw
One of the best bands of the 1980's as far as I am concerned. This song came about almost accidentally as guitarist Mike Rutherford was performing a practice riff Phil Collins came in and improvised with the line 'She seems to have an invisible touch'. Since production Collins has referred to it as his favourite Genesis song and I have to agree with him on that one. The lyrics are apparently inspired by someone who got 'under his skin' and Collins did not think the song would ever become a top hit, it certainly did though and whenever I think of the 80's this one of the first songs that comes to mind.
40
All These Girls- Atlas Genius
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcGTMK-OQI4
Taken from the 2013 album 'When It Was Now', which is probably one of the most diverse sounding albums I have listened to, each track is unique in its own right. This is my favourite song on the album and relates to a man meeting a woman on presumably what is a night out and becoming so entranced which leads him to believe that no other girl/woman is the same as this individual. The lyrics send out a powerful message to those who believe in love at first sight that is for sure.
39
O.N.E- Yeasayer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m1O5i6oUTI
Such a unique sounding song, taken from the 2010 album 'Odd Blood'. I first heard this track playing FIFA 11 back in my secondary school days and it has stuck with me ever since due to its powerful vocals and instrumentals. In terms of the lyrics the song appears to be about a man who was under the control of his partner and then seemingly managed to break loose but is still struggling with the realisation of not having the relationship. The band split up in December 2019 but this song will live long in the memory.
38
Sun Goes Down- Jim Yosef
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hois2F0Jy2Y
Another recent discovery from a YouTube video. Far from mainstream but in my opinion sounds just as good as other similar more popular songs within this genre. Dance/Electronic is not my usual go to but I have a few exceptions and this is one of them, if I am doing some cardio on the treadmill or lifting some weights the upbeat nature of the track is perfect and its a real motivator.
37
The Bell- Normandie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEZWmfdSzqo
There are a lot of under rated and relatively unknown bands in this countdown and 'Normandie' is one of them. I like to think my music taste is diverse and allows me to explore different sounds and get away from the idea that we are all supposed to just like mainstream stuff. When I have been down and upset this has been my go to recently due to its soothing nature and powerful lyrics and its much better than boring Cold Play and Snow Patrol. In terms of the lyrics , the song relates to being under someone or something's spell and eventually being saved by a metaphorical bell ringing in your mind.
36
Learn My Lesson- Young Guns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27-dRST1ExE
One of my favourite bands of all time, Gustav Wood's voice is something else in terms of variation of tone. When people think of modern rock they tend to veer towards 'Kasabian' and 'The Killers' which is completely fine, but it means bands like this fall under the radar. This song is taken from the 2012 album 'Bones' which I would recommend to anyone looking for something a bit different modern rock wise. Its over riding message is through life we live and learn and only through our heart being burdened do we learn life's hard lessons.
35
Dumb- Lower Than Atlantis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K_mE1ENwa4
Another one of my favourite bands of all time and also a band most people I know have never heard of which is a great shame. Taken from the 2017 album 'Safe in Sound' it includes numerous brilliant guitar riffs from the vocalist Mike Duce, who is a bit of a modern rock music legend in my eyes. The song is about a man who through doing a bit of digging finds out his partner has cheated on him and it highlights the plan he has set out in his head to confront her. The powerful vocals and variation in Duce's voice really emphasise the situation and you can almost imagine the story unfold as you listen to the song.
34
Breathe- Cold Years
Great song which for some reason only has 11,000 views on YouTube. Its sad to see modern rock as a genre being thrown to one side and artists such as 'Cold Years' not making it because if we had the ability to travel back in time to the 70s and 80s they would have made it for sure. The song relates to an individual who has spent so long on their own and finally met someone and the array of mental hardship they had experienced before meeting this other person. The character personified within the song refers to themselves as being 'given a reason to breathe' after their life takes a turn for the better following this event.
33
Waiting in the Shadows in the Dead of Night- Little Comets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqX5dJdrHos
The second song in this countdown from Little Comets and another perfectly constructed track lyrics wise. For me this band are one of the very best at producing meaningful lyrics that people of any background can associate with. The song is about spending your life with the person you love and what is left behind of a relationship at the end of each individuals life span.
32
Defeated- Bad Suns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWs-BiFFrss
My favourite band at the moment, and the most underrated vocalist I know of. Front man Christo Bowman has the most adaptable voice I have had the pleasure of listening to and this song is perfect for showcasing that. The song is about loneliness and the negativity surrounding being on your own and wanting to be loved. The way Bowman's voice mixes with the various instrumentals allows you to really capture the emotions of the character personified. It is taken from the 2016 album 'Disappear Here' which is another album I would recommend any one listens to, every track is meaningful in its own right.
31
Rush- Milky Chance, Teme Tan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMqea4GnnKY
Love the way this band incorporates folk, reggae and jazz all into one when it comes to their music and how they adopt a very simplistic approach to creating songs. Their first releases in 2013 were recorded using only a Mac-Book Pro, a guitar and a microphone. This particular song also features Belgian artist Teme Tan and his voice goes perfectly with the overall theme. The track is taken from the 2019 album 'Mind the Moon' and is worth a listen if you are after something up beat and different.
30
When Are We Waking Up?- Mallory Knox
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzTXoKhP8rw
Taken from the 2014 album 'Asymmetry' this song for me epitomises modern rock and the whole album in fact is worth a listen. Mikey Chapman is a great vocalist and when he left the band in 2018 they went a bit down hill as his voice provided the life to go along with the instrumentals. The song itself is about a man who is struggling with the loss of his partner and the constant cycle of memories surrounding the relationship going through his head. For me 2014 as a whole has to be one of the best years for this kind of music, nowadays rock bands who want to make it are forced into a 'chart music' agenda.
29
Fire in the Hole- Tonight is Goodbye
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjjSgXkLPtA
Left field choice again and I was only 12 years old when it was released, but this song brings back memories of me sitting in the living room listening to the music channel 'Scuzz' before leaving for school. I would recommend giving the music video a watch as it will remind you of 2008 so much and the array of bad hair cuts that were floating about that year. The song itself is about breaking up with girls and the immaturity surrounding how some young men go about their business and make girls cry when doing so. Now of course I don't agree with that mentality but it is a good song regardless.
28
Fire- Don Broco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWtTczgvZNU
Taken from the 2015 album 'Automatic' which is up there with my favourite albums of all time. Don Broco's discography as a whole portrays a range of different moods from energetic to cheeky and even sometimes down to earth and serious. This particular track is fast paced and ideal for an intense round of cardio. Lyrically its about being in a relationship where there is no spark and trying to find the good in riding it out. Lead singer Rob Damiani's voice is perfect in portraying the character described within the track due to his variation in pitch and pure emotion.
27
At Most A Kiss- Blossoms
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VXvOJ6b12k
Back in 2016 before they became popular 'Blossoms' were my favourite band. This for me is one of their more under rated tracks and unlike 'Charlemagne' for example, doesn't receive the hype that it should. Like similar bands Blossoms have had to adapt their tone in recent times to try and make it in the industry but before they became big songs like this really highlighted how unique and refined their sound was. The track itself is about a man's pursuit of a woman who is already taken and has eloped and married her current partner. It circulates around the emotions felt by the individual left behind and the fact that he was under the illusion she was always his.
26
She Drives Me Crazy- Fine Young Cannibals
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtvmTu4zAMg
Some music from the 80's is just brilliant and this is one of those tracks. When the song was first produced interestingly the snare drum 'pop' sound was created by recording the instrument separately. A speaker was placed on top of the snare drum and a microphone below then the original recording of the snare drum aspect was played back through the speaker and re- recorded. In terms of lyrical meaning the song is about being 'driven crazy' by the person you are in love with and the inability to get the individual off your mind. The tone and pitch of lead singer Roland Gift's voice perfectly conveys the overall message.
25
The Look of Love Pt.1- ABC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNEdxZURTaI
Another song from the 80's, this is actually Part 1 of a 4 piece. The lyrics of the track are inspired by a by a break up lead singer Martin Fry had experienced. In the second verse, during the phrase 'When your girl has left you out on the pavement', the 'Goodbye' background vocal is spoken by the actual woman in the relationship who had left him. The song itself symbolises pop of that particular era and in 1982 it reached as high as number 5 in NME'S 'Singles of the year'. For me pop as a genre has taken a step backwards in recent times and a track like this reminds us of its roots.
24
NY to LA- The Hunna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5SixPdrtuI
Love this band and their image, they are 100% themselves and will not let the cut throat industry mould them into something they don't want to be. The song is taken from the 2018 album 'Dare' and relates to a relationship in which a couple only have a few hours left together before they go off to pursue their own ventures in different states. It really captures the raw emotions of the individual towards his partner and the fact that she is an ever present in his mind.
23
I Would- Lower Than Atlantis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5KIEbPavKk
The second entry from Lower Than Atlantis in this countdown and there will more than likely be a couple more before the end as they are one of my favourite bands of all time. I was extremely sad to see them disband in May 2019 as they were so well coordinated and could have progressed further in the industry. The song is about a man's desperation to be with the person he loves and the outrageous things he would do in order to fulfil his aim. Mike Duce, the front man, portrays the character perfectly with his range in vocals.
22
A Tale of Outer Suburbia- Hands Like Houses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipT90wd3N4E
In my top three favourite bands of all time and this particular track is brilliant. Taken from the 2013 album 'Unimagine' which I would recommend any fan of modern rock to listen to if you are looking for plenty of riffs and passionate instrumentals. The music video for this song features members of lead singer Trenton Woodley's family and conveys a very powerful message so I would definitely recommend giving it a watch as well. For me 'Hands like Houses' are another under rated band, I can guarantee about one person out of a hundred reading this will know who they are which is a shame.
21
(The Dreamer's Hotel)- Enter Shikari
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJOiQo2ulyw
Another band who's song lyrics are often deep and meaningful. Enter Shikari's lyrics, written by front man Rou Reynolds, are often politically charged and the singer has spoken about being baffled by other similar bands who do not portray a message within their lyrics. This particular track is taken from the latest album 'THE GREAT UNKNOWN' and boasts a very colourful music video with some top dance moves from Reynolds. For anyone who is looking for something eccentric and lyrics with meaning I would advise listening to some of Enter Shikari's songs.
20
Don't Stand So Close To Me- The Police
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNIZofPB8ZM
One of the best bands of this era in my opinion, the band describes their genre as New Wave and Reggae and this song fits that theme perfectly. The song, written by Sting, deals with the mixed feelings of lust, fear and guilt that a female student has for a school teacher and vise versa and inappropriateness leading to confrontation which is unravelled later in the track. Before joining 'The Police' Sting himself had worked as an English Teacher and the overall message of the song is linked to his experiences whilst working in the profession. I would definitely recommend giving the music video a watch also as its very well put together.
19
Over and Out- Flyte
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p_zoGHNg_E
It is sad to see bands like 'Flyte' slip beneath their radar as their sound is so unique and their instrumentals in part remind me of bands like 'The Beatles'. The song itself is about reaching middle age having made plenty of money but without having found sight of love. I think that in itself is a really important message and highlights how lonely we can be without love. The retro nature of this band is what attracted me to their music initially and I would also recommend listening to some of their acoustic and live videos on YouTube, very relaxing stuff.
18
"45"- The Gaslight Anthem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oST77VRHXt0
Another one of the best vocalists of all time in the form of Brian Fallon. The Gaslight Anthem draws influence from artists such as Bruce Springsteen and The Ramones and they describe themselves as a Folk Rock Band. This song was my most played song of 2018 and is taken from the 2012 album 'Handwritten'. It relates to a man struggling to come to terms with a break up and his friends encouraging him to move on to something better and 'Let somebody else lay at her feet'. The raw emotion in Fallon's voice is clear to see when listening to this track and it is a situation many people out there will be able to relate to.
17
Grow Into Love- Half Moon Run
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLxp3ODVk9w
When I have been down, this is the band that has always managed to pick me back up. Collectively they are four of the best musicians I have listened to, each can play at least 4-5 instruments and their use of percussion and group harmonies is so unique and well crafted. This particular song is their most recent release and although I have only listened to it a few times it really resonates with me. It is about being in love and over time growing into love as it is something that adapts and changes as a relationship progresses. There are two versions of the song on YouTube, one an original recording and another a live version. I would recommend both, but certainly the live video as it will give you an insight into how talented each individual musician is.
16
Pretend- Bad Suns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6_PqvrtZYk
The second entry from Bad Suns in this countdown, this time taken from the 2014 album 'Language and Perspective' which I would also recommend listening to in full. This song relates to a man falling in love with a woman in which he is having a one night stand with and his hope that the evening with her will never end. For me this album was a constant back in 2014. I used to drive to and from places and this would be my soundtrack of choice and this is the best song on the album in terms of the blend of different instruments and range in vocals.
15
Follow What You Need- We Are The Ocean
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3la8B0A8SCI
Another great song from 'We Are The Ocean' taken again from the 2011 album 'Go Now and Live'. The song is about a deceitful partner in a relationship and the way in which they lie and fabricate events to suit their own needs whilst hurting those who care for them in the process. The two vocalists help to tell the story in a meaningful way as certain verses suit one voice better than the other. I would definitely recommend this album if you're looking for something up beat and different in the sense that there are two lead singers rather than just one.
14
Amsterdam- Nothing But Thieves
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2zcG3bcuMI
Very powerful and hard hitting song. Taken from the 2017 album 'Broken Machine' the song is about breaking away from the norm and not being afraid to be an individual and pursue your own destiny. It uses the metaphor of 'hitting your head against a wall' in order to convey how desperate the character being portrayed is to not be like everyone else. The band themselves have become relatively successful in recent times compared to some of their counterparts and that is partly because of songs like this and how gifted their lead singer Conor Mason is in terms of varying vocals.
13
Silver- DMA'S
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcBrDDjoGfw
Their best song in my opinion. Showcases how talented a vocalist Tommy O'dell is and how gifted DMA'S are collectively as a band. The track was released in 2019 as a single and has a very poignant music video to go with it. The band themselves remind me of a modernised version of Oasis and I think if they had been around in the 90's they would have been just as successful. It is a shame that we as a population nowadays have adopted a very much 'follow the crowd' like mentality in that we like what we hear on the radio because it is what is spoken about but we don't look to explore lesser known bands. Some people do and here's to to them as far as I am concerned as they are keeping the industry alive.
12
Ultraviolet- The Amazons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY6OfByebSQ
Described as an indie rock group known for crafting catchy and melodic arena rock anthems; The Amazons are another great but underrated band. This song is taken from the 2017 album 'The Amazons' and relates to a man who is waiting for the woman he loves to show him some indication that she cares about what is on his interior rather than just the exterior. For me it sends out a powerful message as it moves away from the stigma that men should hide their feelings and highlights that they are just as important in a relationship from an emotional stand point.
11
Ones and Zero's- Young Guns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNtAZzUncCE
Gustav Wood's vocals in this song are mesmerising and the album itself (One's and Zero's) is one of the great successes of this era in terms of modern rock in my opinion. Wood described it as their heaviest record but also their leanest and most of the lyrics used relate to his own personal experiences in life. This song is one of my favourites on the album and relates to how we as a human race suffer from 'Digital Pain' and have 'Lost our love for life on the way'. We are constantly influenced and suffer from things such as social media and live our lives treading on egg shells because of it, thus losing sight of the basics such as being with the person or people you love and having proper conversation.
10
Pure- Deaf Havana
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtdgcrRlh7c
My favourite song from the 2018 album 'RITUALS'. The album itself was written as a challenge taken up by lead singer James Veck-Gilodi and producer Phil Gornell to subvert the band's writing process and throw out the original rule book. Their earlier albums had been more hardcore and this album was designed to incorporate more of an alternative rock theme. This track relates to going back to the same person every time despite their flaws and being so mesmerised by their 'pure' look that you are unable to drag yourself away from the situation.
9
Colourblind- Hands Like Houses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NSIf7F7uMQ
Another song where the range in vocals and passionate guitar riffs are on point. This particular track is taken from the 2016 album 'Dissonants' which is actually my favourite album of all time, a left field choice indeed but I love every track as the sound is what modern rock and music in general should be all about. The song itself is about the power of a relationship and being colourblind to negative outside sources. I would also recommend giving the music video a watch as well as it helps enhance the overall message of the song as you listen to it.
8
Heartbreaker- Bad Suns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0kFqbg7VEw
The third and final song from 'Bad Suns' in this countdown and in my opinion their best due to its thought provoking nature and powerful message. It relates to being in too deep with the wrong person and places emphasis on the fact that separation seems to enhance this unhealthy form of love. The character portrayed in the song repeats the line 'I should probably go, tell me something I don't already know' which is an indicator that they know they are with the wrong person but because love itself is so powerful they keep going back.
7
I Want Out- Young Guns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISDIAVarYjU
The last song in the countdown from 'Young Guns' and my favourite track of theirs. Interestingly, it has been described pop whereas I would personally class it as rock. It has all the makings of a great rock song and is the only song from the 2015 album 'Ones and Zeros' to make the charts, but as we all know the charts are rigged. In terms of lyrical meaning the piece relates to being in love but wanting more from the other person in terms of effort and not receiving it. This in turn drives the character within the song to 'want out' of the relationship.
6
Favourite Boy- Half Moon Run
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhZi7CKpgzw
This song is brilliant in terms of how well in an instrumental sense it has been put together. The different harmonies throughout and the passionate vocals add to the overall message it is trying to convey. The track relates to a man's pursuit of a female musician and fighting against her popularity from other males due to her fame. He allows himself to be led on under the illusion that something may come of the situation but by the end of the song realises that he will never be her 'Favourite Boy'. The music video is one of the best I have seen and it tells the story in a poignant and meaningful way.
5
Dance All Night- Kids in Glass Houses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fKXGS4c6RY
This is where developing a music taste first started for me, when 'Kids in Glass Houses' released the album Smart Casual in 2008. I was 12 at the time and remember every spare minute I had away from school and homework I was either on the PlayStation 2 or listening to this album. The song is about breaking up with someone who isn't treating you right and the apparent pleasure that can be gained by doing such a thing. It also draws emphasis to the benefit of hind sight as the story is being told in the third person.
4
Modern Love- Courteeners
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cSKfFz5XE8
I remember listening to this song on repeat 20-30 times a day when it first came out. It is brilliant live as well, Liam Fray is such a powerful front man and has a way of owning the stage during the band's performances. The song is about the progression of a relationship and how things can sometimes change over time depending on the individual a person is with. The character within the track repeats 'I don't need this modern love' which is in direct opposition to the modern fallacy that we are all supposed to be with the first person we meet for a lifetime.
3
Beech Like The Tree- Lower Than Atlantis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mFZq01CvL8
Taken from the 2011 album 'World Record' this is my favourite song by Lower Than Atlantis and makes it into my top three as I spent most of 2017 listening to it. The many riffs ad passionate vocals of Mike Duce within the song make it addictive in a way and the music video is a good watch as well. The song is about Duce's friend josh who is a model and the help that he had given the band as they tried to make the big time and also Josh's success in his field.
2
Introduced Species- Hands Like Houses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe3vmzBArxE
This song actually has two different versions. The main version which I have linked here and also a toned down studio version; both of which are just as brilliant as each other. The song is deep in meaning and categorises humans as an 'Introduced Species' to planet earth referring to us all being connected but our existence not being as straightforward as we think. The opening line of the track 'We don't belong here' places emphasis on this idea and begs the questions what if we don't actually belong here? and what if something else put us here with the intention of controlling us?
1
Forget me Not- Brian Fallon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jf4qiIs2AU
So here it is, my favourite song of all time. It is a lyrical master piece and Fallon's voice brings it all together. The music video is brilliant as well and adopts a 1950's dance style theme. The song itself is about the idea of contemplating our own mortality and the idea of love after death, it explores the writer's fear of the person he is in love with moving on after he has passed. Folk rock isn't usually my type of music either but Brian Fallon and his band 'The Gaslight Anthem' are my exceptions to that and this song will stick with me for the rest of my life time.
There we go then, thats my top 50 songs of all time. This was just a side piece to kill the time to start off with but I ended up getting properly into it and exploring particular song lyrics in more depth than I had anticipated. If anyone would like to listen to some of my choices I have linked the relevant YouTube video to each song and I will also attach the playlist I have created on Spotify. Keep an open mind, I know these songs won't be everyone's cup of tea but if its one message I am trying to convey here its be original when you listen to music, don't have it in your head that you have to listen to chart and radio music and enjoy it just because everybody else is. Be prepared to leave the comfort zone and try something new.
